Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage has pledged her support to National Obesity Awareness Week and its campaign to combat obesity in the UK.
Caroline met with organisations backing the initiative, which has been organised on behalf of the National Obesity Forum. The Awareness Week is promoting a 'National New Year's Resolution' to tackle obesity, calling for government and business action whilst encouraging individuals to live a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.
Caroline said:
"Obesity is a considerable problem here in Britain and has implications not just for an individuals' health, but also for the country's infrastructure and economy. In Gosport, 20% of Year 6 children are thought to be overweight, which is a very worrying statistic.
I am pleased to be supporting this national campaign having previously backed local initiatives, such as the MEND lifestyle scheme, which are endeavouring to promote the importance of healthy eating and physical activity in our area."
The National Obesity Forum recently estimated that as much as half of the British population could be obese by 2050, costing the tax payer £50 billion per year.
