"I've been so impressed by the community spirit shown by the people of Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent during this pandemic.
"Now, as we move into the 'very high' alert level from Saturday, we need to continue to act together and think of others. We all need to help slow the spread of this virus, which poses a significant threat to local people.
"Anyone can catch it, and anyone can spread it. It's essential we know the rules and follow them, to help stop it spreading further. This will help reduce the pressure on our NHS services and our tireless health workers.
"We also need to keep supporting our local businesses when we can, as they are the lifeblood of our neighbourhoods and are really struggling.
"We were planning to reopen the Town Hall to everyone in the new year, but unfortunately this will have to go on hold. We will consider the right steps to take after Christmas.
"But essential council services will continue throughout this very high alert period, and right through the festive season."
