Local MP, Caroline Dinenage, has welcomed the news that a joint bid by Portsmouth City Council and Gosport Borough Council has led to a £56 million investment for the Portsmouth and South East Hampshire transport network.
Most importantly, this will fund go towards the redevelopment of the Gosport taxi rank and bus station. The redevelopment of the Bus Station site as a high quality mixed use development incorporating a landmark building has been in the pipeline for many years with a new efficient transport interchange for residents, workers and visitors to be provided.
The investment is being provided through the Transforming Cities Fund, which aims to overhaul local transport links to better connect communities, providing greater access to cities and towns as well as boosting the local economy.
Caroline commented:
“It is fantastic to see over £55 million being invested in our local region.
“Our bus stop and taxi rank were in desperate need of redevelopment, and I know that this will be welcome news for many local residents who want to see our local transport networks improved.”
In Portsmouth itself, the Council has proposed using the funding to provide new bus lanes and links around the city.

“The Transforming Cities Fund allows cities across the UK to enhance their local transport networks, opening up access to jobs and services.
“We’re committed to levelling up transport infrastructure across the country, boosting local economies and enhancing local connectivity. This multi-million-pound investment in Portsmouth and the surrounding area will do just that, helping the area build back better from COVID-19.”
