This Sunday marks Holocaust Memorial Day, remembering those who were murdered during the Holocaust, as well as honouring the extraordinary survivors who are working tirelessly to educate young people today. Sunday 27th January marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, the site of the largest mass murder in history.
In the lead up to and on Holocaust Memorial Day, thousands of commemorative events have been arranged across the country, the theme being ‘Torn from Home.’ Local MP Caroline Dinenage has signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment, pledging her commitment to the Holocaust Memorial Day and encouraging schools and residents to get involved with the resources provided by the Holocaust Educational Trust.
Caroline commented:
“As the Holocaust moves from living history, it is important that we take the time to remember the victims and pay tribute to the incredible survivors. The Holocaust did not start with violence, but venomous words. It is vital to educate the young on the lessons learnt from the past and their contemporary relevance, so that we can say never again.”
