Local MP, Caroline Dinenage, visited Gosport based GO-LGV Ltd, who are a leading provider of professional LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) training, to learn more about their simplified and cost-effective process for obtaining a Class 1 HGV (LGV C+E) licence. This streamlined approach aims to make the training more accessible and affordable, encouraging more individuals to pursue a career in the logistics profession.
It was made possible after the government changed the rules over training in 2021. Now if you hold a full car licence, the process for getting a Class 1 HGV licence has been streamlined. Meaning you need to undertake 30 hours behind the wheel with a qualified instructor, as well as theory exams.
Historically, the costs associated with LGV training have made it prohibitive for many individuals to pursue this career path. GO-LGV Ltd was founded with the objective of simplifying the process and providing opportunities to as many candidates as possible through the fast track training route.
GO-LGV Ltd boasts a team of NRI (National Register of LGV Instructors) time-served qualified instructors, ensuring the highest standard of training. The company is equipped with modern training vehicles and strategically located in close proximity to major hubs, providing a convenient training location for candidates.
Commenting after the visit, Caroline said:
“It was great to meet Damian and Adam to learn more about GO-LGV Ltd. There is a large shortfall in the UK for professional drivers, and the rates of pay and job security are high, so I am delighted that we have a Gosport business looking to train future HGV drivers.
Over the pandemic, we saw how vital hauliers were in keeping our country running and whilst the Government has taken 33 proactive actions to address the shortage of HGV drivers, efforts by companies such as GO-LGV Ltd will help to bolster the workforce of this profession.”
Damian Gaffney, Managing Director of GO-LGV Ltd, highlights the simplicity of obtaining a Class 1 HGV licence:
"Obtaining your Class 1 HGV (LGV C+E) licence, which allows you to drive any heavy goods vehicle up to 44 tons without restriction, is much simpler than people think. You complete your medical and theory examinations, followed by an intensive practical training course typically consisting of 30 hours (approximately 8 sessions) behind the wheel with one of our NRI qualified instructors.
Our emphasis is on developing competent and professional HGV drivers, providing the skills not only to pass the test but also to pursue a successful career in the logistics profession. Importantly, we assist you at every step of the process, from booking the medical and theory tests (Theory, Hazard Perception, and CPC module 2 tests) to the practical driving and CPC module 4.
Approximately December 2021, the criteria for obtaining a Class 1 HGV licence changed to simplify the process and attract more people to the logistics profession. If you hold a full car licence and aspire to drive an artic unit, the process has been streamlined, resulting in a significant reduction in costs as well."
Adam Grant, Training and Centre Manager at GO-LGV Ltd, added:
"At GO-LGV Ltd, we recognise the importance of providing comprehensive instruction and fostering a deep understanding of road safety. Our team of instructors carries the RTITB NRI Qualification (National Register of LGV Instructors) and boasts extensive experience in the field of transport and logistics.
This combination of expertise and industry knowledge enables us to deliver the highest standard of training. Whether it's our C+E Course (Class 1 Artic) or our C Course (Class 2 Rigid), we offer comprehensive programs tailored to meet the specific needs of each aspiring HGV driver."
With its commitment to simplifying the training process, GO-LGV Ltd aims to address the demand for professional drivers in the UK and empower individuals with the necessary skills to excel in the road haulage industry.
Furthermore, GO-LGV Ltd extends its services beyond standard training programs. The company also offers regular driver assessments to major hauliers across the south, ensuring that their drivers maintain the highest standards of competence and safety. In addition, GO-LGV Ltd provides a range of other logistics-related training options, catering to the diverse needs of the industry.
