Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage has welcomed the Government's announcement of a further £2.35 billion to create more school places, on top of the £5 billion that is already being spent this parliament.
The funding boost means that schools in Hampshire will receive more than £81 million between 2014 and 2017. It is the first time that local authorities have had 3-year allocations of funding to spend on school places, so councils can now plan ahead and ensure that every child has a school place.
Speaking after the announcement, Caroline said:
"The last Government failed to address the pressure that rising birth rates has placed on our schools, instead choosing to cut 200,000 primary school places and allow immigration to soar. I am proud that this Government is working on a long-term plan to help young people develop the skills they need to fulfil their potential.
It is great news for young people in Gosport that this Government has secured additional funding to make sure that every child has a place at school."
Since 2010, the Government has created 260,000 new school places and today's announcement means thousands more are on the way.
