Gosport MP, Caroline Dinenage, has today praised action taken by the Government to better protect victims of domestic abuse, rape and sexual violence.
It has been announced that Nicola Jacobs will be appointed the UK’s first ever Domestic Abuse Commissioner, working to support victims, reduce harm and improve the lives of survivors. The Commissioner will work to identify those most at risk and provide reports on how to prevent domestic abuse occurring.
In addition, further specialist support is being provided for victims of rape and sexual assault. A funding boost of £5 million will form part of the Rape Victims’ Pledge to ensure that victims can easily engage with the criminal justice system without distress. The money available to services across the country that provide support will increase by 50% so that victims have a safe space and support to come forward.
Justice Minister Wendy Morton MP, said:
“Rape and sexual assault are horrific crimes, and this cash injection will boost vital services so every victim can access the specialist emotional and practical support they need.
“There is still much more to do, but by increasing funding twice this year and bringing forward plans for a Victims’ Law, this government is sending a clear message that we stand shoulder to shoulder with those who face recovering from such terrible crimes.”
Since 2018 Caroline has been a Champion of domestic abuse charity Hestia’s the ‘UK Says No More’ campaign that is working to end domestic abuse and sexual assault.
Caroline commented:
“Everyone has the right to feel safe in their own home and community. Domestic violence and sexual assault are terrible crimes that often have last longing effects, with victims sometimes afraid to come forward.
“We need to ensure that survivors can get the help they need easily and without fear, showing victims that they are not alone in this fight.”
