Local MP Caroline Dinenage will today make a deputation to Hampshire County Council for a £90 million funding package to ease congestion in Gosport and Fareham.
The package consists of four schemes which will offer a joined up solution to the area's longstanding traffic problems. The plans include a Stubbington bypass, work on Peel Common roundabout, Newgate Lane and on the A27 corridor. Caroline will urge Councillors to vote in support of the proposals which would considerably reduce the time taken to travel between Gosport and the M27.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, she said:
"Our local infrastructure has been in desperate need of attention for a long time. Whilst improvements have been made in some areas, such changes often aggravate existing problems in other parts of our road network.
Remedying a number of traffic complications on the roads between Gosport, Fareham and the M27 will make a significant difference to the lives of longsuffering commuters who endure arduous journeys from the Gosport peninsula each day. That is why securing this funding package is so important and why I am pleased to be making a deputation in support of the bid today."
The deputation comes on the same day that Caroline is to lead a parliamentary debate on transport infrastructure in the South of England. She will call for better transport links to the Solent region by rail as well as by road, and is confident that debating the issue with MPs and Ministers will help to shed light on lengthy journey times.
Caroline is dedicated to tackling transport problems in the local area. Last year, she welcomed the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin MP, and former Transport Minister, Norman Baker MP, to the area and she previously helped to secure an £8.5 million package for work on Newgate Lane which began in January.
