Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage is calling on local schools to get involved in pfeg's campaign to improve the financial capability of young people.
pfeg (Personal Finance Education Group) is driving an initiative to get children talking about money and personal finance. The charity has delivered Get Money Smart posters and teaching materials to every primary and secondary school in the Gosport constituency. Ideas for different ages include checking your change, estimating the cost of a weekly shop, comparing mobile phone tariffs and budgeting for a holiday.
The campaign follows the Government's announcement that financial education will be taught in secondary schools as part of the National Curriculum from September 2014.
Speaking in support of the initiative, Caroline said:
"Getting pupils talking about money and the financial decisions they will face in the future is a fantastic way for them to develop lifelong skills.
I am delighted to be supporting this scheme which will help schools to get children enthusiastic about the crucial role that maths plays in everyday life. I would urge schools in the Gosport area to bring money to life in the classroom using the learning tools available."
The campaign comes as welcome news to Caroline, who has been a longstanding champion for raising rates of numeracy among British adults. Last month, she held a landmark debate in the House of Commons on the importance of literacy & numeracy skills and is currently working to establish an All Party Parliamentary Group on maths and numeracy.
