Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage is supporting Guide Dogs' Safe and Sound campaign to keep pedestrians safe from the silent menace of quiet electric and hybrid vehicles.
Caroline learnt about the danger of vehicles that cannot be heard during an event held by Guide Dogs in Westminster yesterday. The charity is calling for the installation of artificial sound generators to improve road safety for blind and partially sighted people.
Speaking after the event, Caroline said:
"I was shocked to hear that in certain conditions, quiet vehicles are more likely to be involved in a collision with a pedestrian than conventional vehicles.
As the number of hybrid cars on our roads increases, we must do all we can to make sure that blind and partially sighted people can still get around their local area safely."
James White, Guide Dogs' Campaign Manager added:
"We welcome Ms Dinenage's support for our campaign. Quiet vehicles must be safe for all pedestrians and we urge the Department for Transport to take steps to ensure this happens"
